Ten years back I finished the manuscript of Sexuality Trouble and sent it to Routledge for newsletter. I did not realize that the text might have as wide an audience since it has had, neither did I am aware that it could constitute a provocative " intervention” in feminist theory or become cited as one of the founding text messages of andersrum (umgangssprachlich) theory. The life of the text has surpass my intentions, and that is certainly in part the result of the changing context of its reception. As I had written it, My spouse and i understood me personally to be in an embattled and oppositional relation to certain varieties of feminism, even while I understood the text to be part of feminism itself. I had been writing in the tradition of immanent analyze that seeks to provoke critical examination of the basic language of the motion of considered to which it belongs. There is and remains warrant for such a mode of criticism also to distinguish between self-criticism that pledges a more democratic and specially life for the movements and criticism that tries to challenge it altogether. Of course , it is usually possible to misread the former as the latter, but I would personally hope that that will not be done in the case of Gender Trouble.
